Our guide will list all possible solutions to the crashing bugs in Total War Warhammer 3. All the methods listed below have been recommended by the developer, which is now working hard to release a fresh patch.
Check System Requirements
Although Total War Warhammer 3 is not the most demanding game, players still need to make sure that their PCs can handle this new installment of Total War.
Minimum System Requirements:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit CPU: Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 RAM: 6 GB GPU: Nvidia GTX 900 or AMD RX 400 DirectX: Version 11 HDD: 120 GB
Recommended System Requirements:
OS: Windows 10 64-bit CPU: Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 RAM: 8 GB GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or AMD RX 5600-XT DirectX: Version 11 HDD: 120 GB
Verify Integrity of Your Game Files
Players report that many of them have corrupted save files, so the first thing you should do is check whether your game files are corrupted or not by verifying their integrity in Steam and Epic Games.
You can do this by following these steps in Steam:
Go to your Steam client Select “Library” tab Right-click on the Total War Warhammer 3 game Select “Properties” from the list Go to “Local Files” tab Select “Verify Integrity of Game Files” feature
And, here’s a solution for Epic Games:
Start Epic Games app Select “Library” tab Left-click on the three dots at the bottom right of the Total War Warhammer 3 icon Select “Verify” and “Verify Integrity of Game Cache”
Disable Third Party Software
Some additional software that may be installed on your PC may cause the game crashes. The developer indicated two possible programs:
Razer Cortex Citrix
In case of Razer Cortex you simply need to disable the game boost feature by following these steps:
Open Razer Cortex app Select “Game Booster” menu Go to “Boost” tab Uncheck “Automatically Start Boost” option
In case of Citrix, you need to turn it off completely, or uninstall the software, and try to launch the game after a clean reboot.
Switch to DirectX 11
Most new PCs have DirectX 12 version set by default for all games. But Total War Warhammer 3 does not support it, so you need to switch it manually to use DirectX 11.
Here’s how you can do it in Steam:
Start Steam app Right-click on Total War Warhammer 3 Select “Properties” option Type in -dx11 in the Launch Settings box Press “Save” to confirm
Now the game will launch using DX11, and should not crash at this point.
Update Your Graphics Card Drivers
Follow these instructions to update nVidia graphics drivers:
Download the latest nVidia graphics drivers from the official page Start the installation process Restart your PC when finished
Follow these instructions to update ATI Radeon graphics drivers:
Download the latest ATI Radeon graphics drivers from the official page Start the installation process Restart your PC when finished
Run the Game As Administrator
Running the game as administrator can also help, but in this case you need to apply this setting to the actual execution file and not the shortcut.
Follow these steps to run the game properly:
Go to “\Steam\steamapps\common\Total War WARHAMMER III" folder on your PC Right-click on “Warhammer3. exe” file Select “Properties” option Go to “Compatibility” tab Check “Run this program as an administrator” box Confirm by pressing “Apply” and OK
Now you can launch the game with all the administrator rights!
Run the Game in Windowed Mode
Some players identified that the game crashes a lot less when launched in Windowed mode.
You can do the following in order to switch the game from Full Screen to Windowed:
Start Steam app Right-click on Total War Warhammer 3 Select “Properties” option Go to the “General” tab Select “Set Launch Options” feature Type in the following into the box: -windowed -noborder Save and close
