And no, I’m not talking about the worldbuilding, the fights, or the nightmare CGI – but rather the waifus. So here are my picks for the most notable waifus from Overlord.
5. Clementine
Anime has a knack for making even the most detestable characters somehow seem attractive and likeable. So even though she slaughtered a really wholesome bunch of characters and ended some of the wholesomeness this show had, Clementine is still in my top five. Is it just because of the way she is dressed? Perhaps. But an even more important part of her design is her subbed voice actor: Mikaela Krantz. We’re talking about the same person who voiced Tanya from Saga of Tanya the Evil, so you already know the eeriness is cranked up to eleven. Plus, anime has just desensitized me from crazy people. This character loves murder so much that it almost seems like an admirable passion project or something. With that said, I’m going to move on before I end up on some watch-list.
4. Lupusregina Beta
I just realized how redundant my depiction of Clementine was, considering all of the major characters are absolute psychopaths with quite the long list of bodies. Even Lupusregina, who’s usually a very cheerful and preppy person, has quite the masochistic side to her. Then again, that might be what makes her so appealing. The sudden switch from this clueless chick who’s living her best life, over to a masochistic warrior that has come to slaughter your entire village… it’s very memorable and oddly satisfying to see. Plus, when compared to most of the other characters from the maid squad, she’s practically bursting with personality and character depth. The fact that she’s beautiful on top of all that just seals the deal.
3. Shalltear Bloodfallen
Whenever you see a pale white Marry Poppins loli character, you already know she’s going to murder everyone. Lo and behold, Shalltear lived up to my expectations in that regard. She’s one of the livelier characters of the cast, ironically enough considering she’s a vampire, commonly arguing with Albedo and doing her very best to make Ainz notice her. In-between all of the massacres, that is. She’s loyal to a fault, even trying to off herself after being controlled to attack Ainz. And her unyielding confidence while in a fight is nothing short of badass. Plus, her powers are equal parts hax and visual spectacles. And the more you learn about her, the more interesting she gets. Fun fact: Shalltear actually plays for both teams, if you know what I mean, which is quite the nice token of representation! Unfun fact: let’s just say that her ideal mate doesn’t necessarily have to have a pulse. Kind of weird, not going to lie. But I now get why she gets so hot and bothered around Ainz.
2. Albedo
Albedo is the go-to waifu pick for a lot of Overlord fans – and it isn’t exactly difficult to see why. First off, it’s literally in her programming to swoon over the main character, and we’re all self-inserting people. Secondly, she’s a succubus who somehow failed to do the one thing succubuses are known for – which is hilarious and oddly wholesome. Especially since it only adds to her intensity of pursuing Ainz. Thirdly, she kind of wags her wings around whenever she’s excited. And for some reason it’s one of the most adorable things this show has to offer. Like, it’s basically a dopamine button. And god knows we could all use more of that, because yandere characters somehow always manage to get us in the end. There’s no doubt in my mind that Albedo would destroy the planet if she saw one mean or flirtatious tweet pointed at Ainz – and for some reason we collectively went “yes, that is what I want in life”.
1. Narberal Gamma
I don’t know if this is a hot take, but Nabel just takes the cake if you ask me. This is mostly due to the fact that she’s unintentionally so hilarious that every scene she’s in is automatically my favorite scene of that episode. Her insults towards humans are always so creative and specific. I can’t help but crack a smile every time, and I think she makes some of the most impressive “disgust faces” in all of anime. Which is quite the treat given her usual kuudere stance. If English/Japanese isn’t your first language, you can basically learn every word related to insects (and how to use them to insult someone) just by watching Nabel interact with people. And her visual design is just to die for. Also, personally, the fact that her intensity towards Ainz is quite a few notches below Shalltear and Albedo is also a major plus. I like a cool and collected character over one that’s drooling at the mention of Ainz’s name.
